এক অবাঙালী ভদ্রলোক নতুন কোলকাতায় এসেছেন। কোলকাতায় আসার আগে শুদ্ধ বাংলা শিখে এসেছেন। কারণ রাস্তাঘাটে বাংলা না বললে অসুবিধা হতে পারে।
তো, তিনি যাদবপুরে এসে এক রিক্সাওয়ালাকে বললেন, “যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় যাবো।”
রিক্সাওয়ালাঃ “কোথায় ???????”
অবাঙালী ভদ্রলোকঃ “যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়।”
রিক্সাওয়ালাঃ “সে আবার কোথায়??????? ওসব চিনি না।”
আরেক ভদ্রলোক রাস্তা দিয়ে যাচ্ছিলেন। তিনি বলে দিলেন, “আরে ওই ইউনিবারসিটি যাবে।”
রিক্সাওয়ালাঃ “ওঃ! ইউনিবারসিটি যাবেন! বাংলায় বলবেন তো!”
Say it in Bengali!
A non-bengali person came to Kolkata. He had learnt Bengali before coming.
He wants to go to Jadavpur University. So he hired a rickshaw and told the driver, “I want to go to Jadavpur Viswabidyaloy” ( Bengali of University is Viswabidyaloy)
The rickshaw driver exclaimed, “Where?????”
He spoke again, “Jadavpur Viswabidyaloy”
The driver: “No such place around here”
A passer-by helped them. He told the driver, “He wants to go to eunibarsity” ( In Kolkata, common people speak University as eunibarsity in everyday language)
The driver : “Ohh! you want to go eunibarsity! You should have said it in Bengali”
The problem is, though the non-bengali person said earlier in correct Bengali, the rickshaw driver, being illiterate probably, does not know whether University or eunibarsity is English, Bengali or whatever, and rather than “Viswabidyaloy”, he is more familiar to the local pronunciation of University as he comes across it in everyday life.
